Ectopic ureters can cause urine to flow more slowly, which makes it easier for bacteria to reach the kidneys or bladder and can increase the chance of getting urinary tract infections (UTIs).

It’s important to know the signs of a urinary tract infection (UTI) because quick treatment is needed to prevent kidney damage.

In children over 6 years old, symptoms can include a burning feeling when peeing, needing to pee often, cloudy or bad-smelling urine, and tummy pain.

It can be hard to tell if a baby or young child has a urinary tract infection (UTI) because they might not show usual signs. They might just have a high fever, seem more upset than normal, or not want to eat. If you think your child might have a UTI, it’s important to take them to the doctor. The doctor can check and give antibiotics if needed.

Urinary incontinence

In girls, an ectopic ureter can attach to the vagina or the urethra and may not connect near the muscle that controls urine flow. This can cause urinary incontinence, which means that your child may have difficulty holding their urine and may leak it by accident.

Although boys can experience urinary incontinence, it is unlikely to be caused by an ectopic ureter.
